Summer Meal Program Triples Meals Served with Mobile “Lunch Box”

One of our main advocacy goals is to increase summer meal participation. Only 7% of children who are eligible for free or reduced meals during the school year access meals while on break. This past summer long-time partner Painesville City School District purchased a trailer and had it reconditioned with support from Children’s Hunger Alliance and other partners. The mobile unit helped reach students through five feeding sites instead of just one. Year-over-year participation tripled with the school district serving more than 12,000 meals over two months this past summer. They fed an average of 269 children a day for the 45 days the program operated.
