Evidence proves effectiveness of summer hunger program

We know childhood hunger is greatest when kids are out of school in the summer. Now we have federal data that shows the real impact summer hunger programs have on reducing childhood food insecurity and improving nutrition.

Summer EBT for Children, or SUN Bucks, provides families $120 for each eligible school-aged child to buy groceries during the summer and is the first permanent USDA program in over two decades. For 12 years, the USDA has been studying its effectiveness. They found SUN Bucks reduces the number of children skipping meals by a third and increases the amount of fruits and vegetables they eat by 13 percent.

When you put the impact of SUN Bucks together with increased summer meals support by CHA and our partners, it goes a long way in filling the summer hunger gap.
